Paving in Oglethorpe County's Seat

Asphalt paving in Lexington is mostly country work. Lexington has been the seat of Oglethorpe County since the seat moved there from Philomath in 1800, and it was incorporated in 1806. It is one of the smallest county seats in Georgia, with 203 residents in 2020, down from a peak of 635 in 1900. Most of the paving around Lexington is long driveways and farm lanes across rolling Oglethorpe County land.

Three highways through a small town

US 78 runs through Lexington, 17 miles northwest to Athens and 25 miles southeast to Washington. GA-22 runs north to Comer and southeast to Crawfordville, and GA-77 runs northeast to Elberton and south to Union Point. A lot of homes in and around town front one of those state routes. Driveways that connect to them need a GDOT permit for work in the state right-of-way, through the district area office.

Rural drives

Long gravel drives on hilly ground lose stone with every heavy rain. We regrade, add stone where needed, crown the surface and pave, with edges backfilled so they stay supported. For very long drives, we often pave the steep or most-traveled section first.

Old and new together

Lexington's historic houses and churches sit close to the highways, and many properties have driveways that were paved long ago and patched since. For these, we look at whether the base is still firm. If it is, patching failed areas, crack sealing and a sealcoat can keep it going. If the base is gone, replacement is the better investment.

Long-term value on rural land

On larger tracts around town, owners sometimes ask whether to pave the whole drive or only the part near the house. Paving the steepest and most-traveled sections first and leaving level, lightly used stretches as gravel can be a sensible middle ground.
