Paving in Oconee County's Seat
Asphalt paving in Watkinsville serves a small city with a long history and a lot of recent growth. Watkinsville was incorporated in 1815 and served as the Clarke County seat until the courthouse moved to Athens in 1872; when Oconee County was carved out in 1875, Watkinsville became its seat. The town grew from 2,097 residents in 2000 to 2,832 in 2010 and 2,896 in 2020. That mix shows on the driveways: some homes near the center have pavement that has been patched for decades, while newer homes on the edges have asphalt that is still young enough to protect.
Older driveways near downtown
Around Main Street and the streets near the courthouse, many driveways are narrow, short and patched more than once. When an older driveway is broken into pieces or rutted in the wheel paths, the stone base under it is usually thin or gone, and an overlay will not last. We remove the old surface, repair the base and repave. Where the driveway is sound but tired, a resurfacing overlay with joints cut at the garage and street can bring it back at lower cost.
Protecting newer pavement
For homes built in the last twenty years, the goal is to slow aging. Sun turns asphalt gray and brittle, and cracks let water reach the clay underneath. Sealing cracks before they widen and sealcoating every few years are inexpensive and add years to a driveway. If you are not sure whether your driveway needs attention, we will tell you honestly.
Business lots around Wire Park and the south side
Watkinsville's east side includes Wire Park, a business, dining and entertainment hub built on the site of a former wire factory, and the south side has an industrial park and small businesses. Lots like these need sound drive lanes for delivery trucks, clean striping and correct accessible spaces. We handle patching, mill-and-overlay, sealcoating and restriping, phased so customers can still park.
Oconee County lots
Outside the city limits, Oconee County homes often sit on an acre or more with long, curving driveways and wooded edges. Tree roots lift and crack asphalt near large oaks and pines, and leaf litter that stays wet along the edge softens the soil. On those drives we keep the pavement edge clear of the drip line where we can, cut and repair root-damaged sections, and recommend clearing debris off the edges each fall.
A walkable downtown
As the city adds sidewalks and its downtown development authority works on Main Street, more driveways cross pedestrian routes. Where a driveway meets a sidewalk, we taper the transition so there is no trip edge, and we keep new asphalt off the concrete walk.
Sidewalks and the right-of-way
The city has been adding sidewalks, including on VFW Drive and a sidewalk and pedestrian bridge on Harden Hill Road, and it has adopted a new bike and pedestrian transportation plan. If your driveway crosses a sidewalk or meets a city street, changes to that connection may need city approval. We check with the City of Watkinsville or Oconee County, depending on the road, before any work in the right-of-way.

Watkinsville Questions
Do I need a permit to change my driveway entrance in Watkinsville?
Changes to where a driveway meets the street or crosses a sidewalk generally involve the city or county that maintains that road. We check the current requirements for your address before work in the right-of-way.
My driveway is from the 1980s. Can it be resurfaced?
Possibly. If the base is still firm and the cracking is on the surface, an overlay can work. If there are ruts and broken areas, replacement is the better investment.
Do you work on business lots near downtown?
Yes. We patch, overlay, sealcoat and restripe small business lots and phase the work so customers can still park.
Tree roots are cracking my driveway. What can you do?
We cut out the lifted section, address the root where it is safe for the tree, rebuild the base and patch. If roots run under much of the driveway, we talk through rerouting or replacing.
Do you serve the rest of Oconee County?
Yes, including the areas around Watkinsville, Bogart and the county's rural roads.
