Repairs That Address the Cause

Asphalt repair is what most people in Athens search for when their driveway or lot starts breaking up, and it is often the smartest money to spend. A sound driveway with a few bad areas does not need to be replaced. It needs those areas cut out, the base under them corrected, and new hot mix compacted in their place. Done right, a repair blends into years of service. Done as a shovel of cold patch in a wet hole, it is back in a month.

Why asphalt fails in spots

Most local failures trace to water. A downspout that empties onto the driveway, a low spot where rain sits, or a crack that has let water into the base for a few seasons all soften the red clay underneath. Once the clay gives, the asphalt above it flexes under every car until it breaks into a pothole or a patch of alligator cracking. On sloped lots, runoff also eats away the soil beside the pavement until the edge has nothing under it and snaps off.

How we repair

Saw-cut patching

We cut a clean rectangle around the damaged area, past the edge of the cracking, and remove the broken asphalt. Wet or soft base is dug out and replaced with compacted stone. The edges get a tack coat, then hot mix is placed and rolled flush with the surrounding surface. This is the standard repair for potholes and alligator-cracked areas.

Edge rebuilding

Broken edges are cut back to sound asphalt, the base is extended and compacted, new asphalt is placed, and soil is backfilled against the edge so it is supported. If runoff caused the damage, we show you where the water needs to go instead.

Crack sealing

Cracks wider than a hairline are cleaned and filled with hot-applied rubberized sealant. Sealing them keeps water out of the base, which is the cheapest way to prevent the next pothole. Fine surface cracking is usually handled with sealcoat.

Utility cuts and trench repair

Where a plumber or utility crew has cut through the driveway, the trench backfill often settles. We bring the trench back to grade with compacted stone and patch it with hot mix.

Repair, resurface or replace?

If failed areas are scattered and the rest of the surface is firm, repair is the right call. If the whole surface is oxidized and cracked but still firmly supported, resurfacing may make more sense. If failures cover most of the area, replacement is usually the better value. We will tell you which category your pavement is in and why.

Timing

Hot-mix patches are best placed in dry weather when the ground is not frozen. Athens has a short freeze season, so repair work can run most of the year on dry days. Cold patch is a temporary fix for winter emergencies, and we tell you when that is what you are getting.

Asphalt Repair Questions

Why do potholes come back in the same place?

Because the base under them is still wet or soft. Filling the hole without removing the failed material and correcting the base leaves the cause in place. Saw-cut patching with base repair addresses it.

Is cold patch good enough?

Cold patch is a temporary fix that holds until hot mix can be placed. It is useful in winter or for an emergency, but it rarely lasts as a permanent repair.

Can you repair a driveway and sealcoat it at the same time?

Yes, as long as the patches are cured enough. We typically repair first, seal cracks, and then sealcoat so the whole surface looks uniform.

Is there a minimum charge for small repairs?

Most paving crews have one because mobilizing equipment costs the same for a small patch. HomeGuide lists typical minimum fees of $100 to $250. Grouping several repairs into one visit gives you more for the money.
